Beets, beets and more delicious beets

Week six of our CSA delivery. Beets were very welcome. I’ve always loved beets, but have recently discovered how delicious they are when roasted.

Nature’s way…

As I spend a few minutes each day picking a handful of tomatoes, the natural ripening process never fails to leave me in awe. Sometimes there are absolutely ripe tomatoes, in their hottest, slinkiest red outfits just waiting by the curb to be picked up, hanging out next to their seemingly subdued, patient, comparatively dull counterparts who in turn exude a transparent green, you-know-I-ain’t-ready-so-don’t-touch-me-fool vibe.  Sometimes there are those who have already donned the party outfit and just put on the final touches of Vampire Red lipstick, but they must still be messing with their hair or something, because they’re no where near the curb, they’re lurking out back, in the depths of the branches they call home. You can coax them out, but you have to reach mighty carefully, every move puts their home and your next solanum lycopersicum fix in jeopardy. The walls are paper thin in tomatohood, the walls come down easily. Snap, and it’s all over for that branch of the family…

The two-headed monster!

Week five speaks for itself!

The $64 turkey

Amish free-range turkey from Georgia’s Market, mashed sweet potatoes and roasted butternut squash from the Gundermann Acres Farm and stuffing made with peppers from Home Sweet Farm. Also on the table were cranberry sauce, green bean casserole, pea salad and orange salad. For dessert, an apple pie from Sinful Bakery with homemade cinnamon vanilla ice-cream using milk from Way Back When Dairy. It was well worth the investment : )

CSA quatro

It was a good week, beautiful green beans, and I got to meet our CSA coordinator, Ginny, in person which was very cool (she’s British and it’s always fun to meet another Brit). With Thanksgiving coming up we made extra effort to use up some of the veggies tonight while fresh…
